Mary-Pat Hector ran for the city council in Dekalb, Georgia, when she was just 19, becoming one of the youngest people to run for office in the state's history. When one of her opponents challenged her bid, saying she was too young to run for the seat, Mary-Pat didn't back down—and convinced the county board of elections that she had the right to stay in the race. She may not have won that city council seat, but Mary-Pat is continuing to work in community service.
