Our Story

Perfect Brown was inspired by a simple conversation between a parent and child. One afternoon, after picking up my daughter Malaya from elementary school, she began telling me about a class project to create a self-portrait. During the assignment it was explained that Black people come in different shades and skin tones.

Malaya being curious, innocent and with no idea of the concept of skin tones asked me, “What color brown am I?” I quickly thought of the importance of an answer to ideas and concepts like these are introduced to a young child so I carefully considered my response and said, “You are Perfect Brown - like me, like Mommy and like Granny. Every shade of brown a person can have is Perfect Brown.”

That moment became a reminder, a declaration, and a message that deserved to live beyond the car ride. Perfect Brown affirms that our skin is special, beautiful, unique and Perfect Brown, no matter its shade. It’s more than a brand; it’s an affirmation, a legacy and a truth to be passed down.
